It is said that the flag of the United States was designed by Betsy Ross, a seamstress who lived in Philadelphia during the American Revolution. But, according to PBS, “some historians believe it was designed by New Jersey Congressman Francis Hopkinson and sewn by Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross.”

Arts for Lawrence is excited to bring another year of summer concerts to the fort! Fridays at the Fort is a FREE outdoor community concert series, with food trucks, kid’s activities, and a beer tent. This summer’s dates and bands include: June 4th – The Midtown Madmen June 18th – Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra July 2nd – Mississippi Raglips and the River Dogs July 16th – Queen Delphine and The Crown Jewels July 30th – Heartstone Crossing August 13th – Teresa Reynolds This year’s concerts will be held at the new Fort Ben Cultural Campus, which opens May 22nd, on the corner of Post Road and Otis Avenue.

UPDATED: The Grand Opening celebration will span a weekend of free public events, starting on Friday, June 18th. This day will serve as the kickoff to the opening of the Fort Ben Cultural Campus and the world’s first, permanent set of Musical Swings – right here in Lawrence, Indiana! The campus will feature a newly-renovated historic Theater, a Visual Arts Center, an Artist Walk, a History Walk, and an Amphitheater, all surrounded by stunning public art displays and green spaces. Join us for a celebration with free, interactive experiences for the whole family, as well as performances in music, dance, and theater.

On June 19th Arts for Lawrence (AFL) will present our 1st Annual Juneteenth Jubilee, the first of its kind in Lawrence. A free community program, this event will be a celebration of Black culture and artistry, Black musicians, poets, dancers, singers, and artists from across Indianapolis and the surrounding areas. Juneteenth Jubilee will take place on and around our outdoor stage, located inside our NEW Fort Ben Cultural Campus, which is set to open on May 22, 2021. Five spots are available for the Artist Walk. AFL is seeking artists who specialize in jewelry, textiles, clothing, ceramics, mixed media, watercolors, acrylics, etc. The vendor fee is $25. In addition to the above, the event will include a community art project, two children’s activities, two food trucks, and musical swings.
